Cabo Blanco’s history is steeped in the fishing industry rather than surfing but it looks like all of that could be set to change once you have had a chance to salivate over these perfect peelers and the wave they have nicknamed the Peruvian Pipeline.
The name Cabo Blanco originates from the light coloured mountains that surround the bay. Back in the 50s and 60s fishermen flocked into town chasing the big game fish Marlin. Ernest Hemingway stayed at the infamous Cabo Blanco Fishing Club for over a month while overseeing the filming of his novel The Old Man and the Sea and pulled out a 700 pound whopper.
The wave first came to light in the late 70s when is was discovered by a local and likened to the Hawaii Pipeline wave because of its similar hollow power. The interesting point of note is that the swell does actually drive through from the direction of Hawaii and before modern forecasting was so easily available, the best method was to get a phone call from the US island notifying of the swell, then in five days or so that very same big surf would land in Peru.
