Wind Moon Tide

wind_moon_tide Bells Beach 1981. The quintessential Bells some might say. A new film which focuses on the battle between Simon Anderson and Bobby Owens on that day has been released. Owens rides a Nick Carroll 6′5″ single fin while Simon introduces an early thruster.


In a tumultuous swell Simon Anderson made surfing history winning the event on one of his early board designs. Bobby Owens rode a Terry Fitzgerald shaped Carroll single fin that day, but was outclassed by the speed of the the thruster. The event went down as the first day a judging team had to pick between thruster and single fin boards. Bobby went on to win the trials, and was held in high regard that day.

Under the guise of Kye Fitzgerald the 6′5″ has made somewhat of a resurgence and Kye rode this board again more recently at Bells in a similar size swell.
