The hippie mecca of Byron Bay filmed way back in the 1960s. Before Byron became a backpackers haven it was a quiet coastal town, home to several first-rate sand-bottomed surf breaks, and a proving ground for the late-’60s shortboard revolution.
A trawl through the archives this week rewinding to 1957 and the dependable surf break of Windansea in La Jolla, San Diego.
The reef break, often covered in sand, delivers some fantastic right-handers and is fortunate enough to be rideable all year in all conditions.
The lifeguard cover at Mawgan Porth beach near Newquay is to be reviewed after the tragic deaths of three surfers possibly caught in a riptide.
The RNLI lifeguard patrols run from March to September with clear signage warning sea users outside of this time.
The adults believed to be in their 40s and 50s were taken unconscious from the sea while four children also caught in the same accident managed to get out unscathed.
