Beaches constantly serve to remind us of the challenge which we face in preserving the marine environment. Penhale was no exception this week as TCV Cornwall set about removing the flotsam from our shore line.
The last month has seen a run of massive storms and swells crash into the Cornish coastline. With the biggest and most recent being the now infamous Hercules swell. Massive waves, flooding and coastal damage has flashed across the media. These storms have also highlighted the amount of rubbish in the ocean with build ups of waste at the high tide mark along the coast.
One of the most outrageous of these being the enourmous amount of rubbish dumped into the northern corner of Perran Sands. A beach clean up was organised by The Conservation Volunteers Cornwall. I was able to join them to help out with the cleanup and take a few photos. The Conservation Volunteers Cornwall were quick to manage the clean up to prevent the rubbish being washed back into the sea and before it could harm wildlife.
I am shocked to see the amount of rubbish washed up. Our beaches generally look quite clean and the ocean is often clear, but this really shows we still have a long way to go in looking after the environment. I would like to say a big thank you to TCV Cornwall who do a lot of great work.
