This Christmas sees Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) proudly announce the installation of 10 innovative and engaging community information boards at some of the most beautiful and iconic harbours in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Seas For Life, Not Just For Christmas!
Surfers Against Sewage have worked with the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation (CFPO) and the Fisheries Local Action Group (F.L.A.G) with the clear goal of promoting sustainable coastal communities. As part of SAS’s Seas For Life education programme, these information boards highlight the importance of caring for the marine environment and its vital links to economic activity in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, providing a connection between the public and fishermen.
SAS unveiled the first Seas For Life information board at Newlyn Harbour on Friday 6th of December and were joined by Newlyn Harbour Master Rob Parsons, FLAG Animateur Chris Ranford, Andy Wheeler of the CFPO, local fishermen and, most importantly, pupils from Newlyn Primary School who also took part in SAS’s interactive Seas For Life education session.
SAS also installed these fantastic Seas For Life information boards at Newquay, Portreath, St Ives, Newlyn, Mousehole, Porthleven, Coverack, St Mawes, Looe and St Mary’s (IoS) harbours. Make sure you go and see them over the Christmas holidays and learn how the Seas For Life sustainable message can help improve your coastal community. SAS would like to thank the Harbour Masters and communities for embracing the Seas For Life message.
SAS Education Officer Dom Ferris:
“We are inexorably linked to our marine eco-systems, these interpretation boards will both enhance and support the sense of sustainable stewardship that already exists in the fishing & coastal communities of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for many years, protecting our Seas For Life”
Paul Trebilcock, Chief Excecutive of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation (CFPO):
“The Cornish fishing fleet have been and continue to be at the forefront of sustainable fishing in Europe. Partnerships with scientists, use of selective gears and the very mixed nature of the fisheries around the Cornish coast have all contributed to this over the past few decades. It is widely acknowledged throughout the fishing industry that a healthy and diverse marine environment is closely related to a healthy and diverse fishing industry.”
FLAG Animateur Chris Ranford:
“Supporting SAS in creating these information panels with FLAG funds is great way to educate the public on what local species we have in our waters and also the environmental issues that surround them.”
