The Early Bird catches the surf…

By Tom · On July 16, 2015

If you are looking for super-consistent solid surf all year round, sublime water temperatures that never drop much below 25°c, views that quite frankly would be worth the trip alone and a place to stay that is enveloped in a tropical rainforest with wildlife that would excite Attenborough himself then you need not look any further than the Early Bird Surfhouse in Costa Rica.

The Surfhouse lies on a hillside in a quiet, peaceful area with a spectacular beach view of the local home-break of Playa Hermosa. The loft-style‚ open-air house offers space for a maximum of 20 guests, divided into two floors. Grab the telescope on the balcony and train your eyes on the surf conditions or become entrenched in the local bird and wildlife that surrounds the lodge.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Hermosa, is just a 15 minute stroll down the hill. Or if you aren’t feeling so active jump in the regular shuttles that run from the accommodation to the ocean, that way you can save your energy for the main event - some of the best and most consistent surf that the country has to offer.

Surf

You will find constant waves for beginners as well as advanced surfers which break all year long. Early Bird offer a complete range of surfboards  from shortboards to mals and fishes to longboards all in a wide range of lengths.

As well as Playa Hermos there are four other great surf-spots to explore all really close to the lodge, these include:

Santa Teresa: a very popular surf spot for all levels of experiences with numerous beach breaks

Playa Carmen: centrally located beach break

Mal Pais: Indo-style reef break’(sunset reef) for pros

Manzanillo: Excellent outer reef break for big waves

Lodge

Embedded in the mysterious rainforest and surrounded by the calming sound of the Pacific Ocean lies the lodge, surrounded by the spectacular view of the constantly breaking waves, the beautiful beach and the surroundings of Playa Hermosa.

You can choose between single, double or shared rooms which convey an outdoor-living, enjoy your daily surf check and the unforgettable sunset from our cozy chill-lounge or catch up with your emails via the free wifi.

With the help of our unique telescope, which is exceptional in this area, exploring the surf breaks and environment becomes a daily routine. Who knows, you might get inspired and become a bird or whale watcher during your stay

Raccoons, iguanas, coatis, agutis, howler and capuchin monkeys become daily visitors and can be watched with without the use of the telescope. It is a great chance to load up on Vitamin N(ature) which is great for your body & mind.

Tours & activities

If the surf, lodge and wildlife isn’t enough there are plenty of other great things to do in the area including

Montezuma Waterfalls & Canopy Tour:
You have the opportunity to see the rainforest from a bird’s-eye view.
This is one of the areas premier attractions, this zipline tour follows the Montezuma river and gives you an opportunity to visit the famous waterfalls. There you can take pictures and/or go for a swim in the pools carved by the cascading waters.

After arriving you will be prepared a tasty BBQ lunch, while you explore the island. The afternoon can be spent however you like: playing volleyball, kayaking, hiking, snorkelling, or just lying under the coco trees.
