Waterworld - Next level street art

By Tom · On July 22, 2015

You would never guess from Hula’s teenage affinity for graffiti to tattoos in his hometown on Oahu, Hawaii that he would someday become the thriving Brooklyn-based visual artist that he is today.

With a background in fine art, twenty-six year old Hula has returned to his street art roots in a series of murals that draw on inspiration from the ocean and the island culture of which he grew up.

“The original idea sparked when I was working on a separate project. Since water has always been my main inspiration, I had the idea to paint these portraits of girls underwater.” Hula told Drift

“While doing the photo shoots for the paintings, I realized how much I loved to be in the water and still working creatively. From there, I knew I wanted to figure out a way to paint in water. The concept grew slowly by slowly, each idea building into a final form for the murals.”

Grappling with unexpected mediums like abandoned urban walls and broken surfboards, is what makes Hula’s murals truly exciting and different from the norm - bringing the sea to street with his creativity.

“The messages I hope to capture with these murals were the connection and relationship I have with my environments. From growing up in Hawaii to moving to New York, I have had to adapt to the radical environment change and these pieces try to capture those emotions.” Hula added
